POWERFUL WOMEN TO LOOK OUT FOR IN 2021

As women continue to make strides for their rights all over the globe, feminism has spread rapidly. Although women continue to bring themselves up into the world, there are still laws being established to limit the rights that women have. With women’s rights at stake, there are powerful female social activists taking a stand and fighting for what they believe in. I believe these women are role models that we need to look up to.

Greta Thunberg

Greta Thunberg is a young female climate activist from Sweden. She was TIME Magazine’s person of the year in 2019 for vocalizing the seriousness of climate change and how we need to make changes as a society to slow it down. Thunberg first rose to the public eye with her speech “Our House is on Fire,” which shares a name with her first book. Thunberg is only 18 years old and has already met with the United Nations and other powerful diplomatic entities to discuss the best ways to go about making global changes. She is a powerful woman who will continue to make strides in climate change awareness.

Simone Biles

Simone Biles is an American gymnast who has competed in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. She has become one of the most successful gymnasts and her skill level is high above many in the competition. Recently, Biles withdrew from the 2020 Olympic games out of fear for her mental health. Many current and former athletes spoke out about this in support of Biles saying that most people do not understand the amount of pressure placed on Olympic athletes. Simone Biles has made it a goal to advocate for mental health especially, in regard to young women and athletes. She has also spoken out in defense of sexual assault victims and has advocated for women’s rights.

Lizzo

Lizzo is an American pop singer and rapper. She has had a large presence on social media since her rise to fame and she is one of the biggest advocates for plus sized women, specifically plus sized women of color. Lizzo wants to normalize healthy eating habits and exercising while being plus sized. Lizzo is often creating content around her vegan lifestyle, trying new TikTok trends, and actively normalizing the use of the word “fat” and how it is not always a bad descriptor. Lizzo has stated in an interview that she wants to be an activist because she is smart and wants to help people, not just because she is “fat and black”.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC as most know her, is the youngest member of Congress and is serving New York’s 14th District, the Bronx and Queens. AOC has made powerful moves in Congress and has made herself a large political figure for the Democratic Party. AOC focuses her political action on discussing issues including homelessness, border patrol, climate change, women’s rights and higher wages. AOC recently spoke out against Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, who just signed a bill that prevents women from getting an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. She has stated that she is tired of men who do not understand female biology making laws to restrict female reproductive rights. She heavily spoke out against former United States President Donald Trump and his extremely restrictive immigration laws and border policies. AOC has made massive progress in Congress and will continue to do so.

Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar, a refugee from Somalia, is the Representative for Minnesota’s 5th District. She is the first woman of color to represent Minnesota in Congress and made waves when election announcements came out. Omar is one of two Muslim-Americans in Congress. She prioritizes higher wages to combat the issue of full-time workers being unable to pay their bills. Omar also speaks out about topics such as climate change, student debt, and reformation of the U. S. immigration system.
