WHAT WILL BIDEN’S “EQUALITY BILL” MEAN FOR WOMEN IN THE U.S?

-

Months ago, President Joe Biden announced his plan to improve the situation of American women, particularly women of color. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, many have lost their jobs, and others have been denied access to health care.

Former President Donald Trump adopted hostile rhetoric against people of color and definitely, he did not attempt to defend African American women. Unfortunately, racism became increasingly evident, not only against black men but also black women.  In the workplace, in health care, in the streets, and even in prisons, women of color are treated inhumanely.

It is agreed upon that President Biden is considered a better alternative in comparison to Trump for people in marginalized groups, particuarlly women. The Biden administration took various decisions to empower women.  However, the new equality act has brought controversy.

The House of Representatives has passed the equality act this week, arguing that it ensures that no one will get ill-treated for his/her gender identity. “We are really excited to have the incredible support of President Biden and his commitment to make the Equality Act the law of the land,” Rep. David Cicilline, a cosponsor of the Equality Act said Thursday.

While a number of Americans have supported this bill, others believe that the “empowering act” will have a disastrous impact on the security of women and girls.

“The so-called Equality Act would eliminate women’s privacy and safety, forcing them to share public bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, and even battered women’s shelters with biological males. The harms aren’t hypothetical; local laws to this effect have already led to a kindergartener being assaulted in her school restroom, a rape survivor being forced to quit her job, and nine women being harassed in a shelter”, said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins.

The new act has further exposed the real polarization in American society. Democrats, on the one hand, believe that the act will protect the LGBTQ+ class in the U.S., while Republicans believe that it would have a negative impact on women, and it might force religious groups to conform to principles they oppose.

Share with us your opinion, do you believe that this new act will bring more equality and harmony to American society? ….OR it will expose women to serious danger?
