We are so excited to have you as our December Cover Model! For the readers who do not know who you are, please tell them who is Crystal Hayslett?
I was raised in Martin, TN as a small-town girl with big dreams. Everything I learned during my upbringing helped to mold me into the woman you see today. After college, I worked on Capitol Hill and soon came to the realization that I wasn’t living in my purpose. I truly desired to pursue my actual dreams of singing and acting. Ultimately, with the decision to relocate to Atlanta, came struggle and some tough life lessons, but I never let anything deter me along the way.
You started out as Costume Designer for a number of hit shows such as “The Paynes”, “Boo 2” and The Haves and the Have Nots just to name a few. How did you get your start and what prompt you to make that transition to becoming an actress?
In 2013, I landed a job as a production assistant at Tyler Perry Studios, little did I know this job would end up changing the entire trajectory of my life. I worked my way up through the ranks of the costume department and by 2015, I was offered the department head position of Costume Designer. In the following months, I was asked to be Tyler Perry’s personal stylist. I didn’t pursue acting or singing for five years while I work with Perry — until one day Tyler Perry’s Sistas came about. That was the first time in a long time that I felt the urge to want to act. Then along came the character Fatima and the rest was history.
How has it been working the talented Tyler Perry over the years?
It has been an absolute honor to work with Tyler Perry. It’s like you’re living in a master class working with him day in and day out. I take so many mental notes and somethings I don’t even realize I do, but that’s just from being around him for so long.
Being that you are curvy and in the spotlight, do you every the pressure from Hollywood to look a certain way? How do you handle that pressure?
Hollywood is a very vain industry and it does put certain pressures on you to look a certain way. I will say the love I’ve gotten for being curvy playing Fatima has been really refreshing. I love that other women can see themselves when they see me on their television screens. I think representation is important.
You presence on television is breaking barriers! I hope you know that! It what other ways do you want to continue breaking barriers in Hollywood being a Curvy Black Actress?
Absolutely!! I want to show other women their dreams aren’t over just because they don’t have a particular physique.
COVID has change the way we are living, working and socializing. How have you adapt during this pandemic?
One thing about me is I don’t mind being alone. This time has given me the opportunity to focus on my creativity and really hone in on my craft — time that I wouldn’t have had if I wasn’t forced to sit still.
What COVID holiday plans do you have this year?
I’m going to see my family in Tennessee and will only be around immediate family members. My mom is a respiratory care therapist, so she’s not playing around and we want to make sure everyone stays safe and healthy this year.
December is our Holiday issue! My favorite time of the year, lol! What is your best holiday memory?
My best holiday memory was a few years ago. My family usually has everyone over, and we host a big Christmas party. I cooked a huge dinner for my entire family and made everyone dress up. It was so much fun! I love seeing people’s satisfaction from a good meal — preferably one I prepared.
Make sure to catch Crystal on Tyler Perry’s Sistas on Wednesday nights at 9pm ET only on BET.
