Luxe Kurves talked with fashion designer Dedrick Thomas, CEO of Hideoki Bespoke. We learned that Thomas graduated from Mississippi State University at the College of Engineering with Magna Cum Laude Honors. In 2006, Thomas made a career switch from engineering to entrepreneur and started a fashion business. He has worked with big household names like T.I., Rick Ross, Gucci Mane, Magic Johnson, and many more well-known individuals. He’s encouraged by his grandmother and motivated by his family.
FPL: How did you realize entrepreneurship was for you? Why did they change?
Thomas: Honestly, I grew up in a town and a family that always worked with what they have. I always wanted to be on the business side of things, but at the same time in the technology field as well. Growing up as a kid, I always wanted to do my business. It didn’t matter what type of business. Entrepreneurship was in me as a young kid by watching my grandmother and people like that work hard for what they have. I wanted to do better for what they sacrificed for me.
FPL: How did you start in the fashion industry?
Thomas: In my engineering company I was in, I worked with fashion brands. So I had opportunities to be around brands like Polo, Ralph Lauren, etcetera. I’ve always loved fashion all my life from the connections I made. I used that to start Hideoki Bespoke. I started selling clothes from the trunk of my car.
FPL: The motto of your company is “We do not design clothes. We enhance lifestyles.” What does it mean?
Thomas: Looking the part is one of the keys to success. If a person walks in the room and looks good, that’s half a battle.
FPL: You have accomplished a lot. How would you describe your success?
Thomas: My grandmother told me a long time ago that you build it and they will come. I never focus on meeting celebrities or business executives. I just knew that if I build the brand in the right way, they will come. I make sure that I stay true to who I am and provide excellent customer service and a great experience – that’s what it’s all about for me.
FPL: Is there anything you’d like to add?
Thomas: The Hideoki Bespoke website you are looking at is one of our old websites. If you look at Hideoki Instagram, it will give you a better feel of where we are today. Our whole brand is all traditional elegance meets smart and satisfaction with confidence, precision, and the unexpected.
There is a lot more to expect from Dedrick Thomas because, like his spirit animal “Rhino,” he only moves forward to evolve. For Thomas, success did not come easy; it takes hard work, perseverance, resilience, dedication, and evolution.
