WHY ARE THESE REPUBLICANS SO PRESSED OVER CARDI?
In light of the presidential elections coming to a close, a feud sparked between two well-known Black women. 27-year-old rapper Cardi B was bashed by 32-year-old conservative commentator Candace Owens in September following the artist’s interview with Joe Biden (Democrat).
Owens appeared on The Ben Shapiro Show in early September. She spoke about how the interview between presidential candidate Biden and Cardi B was an act of pandering, claiming that it was catering to the Black voting population and influencing their votes through their music tastes. The American author’s feature on the TV show sparked a Twitter squabble, to which Cardi B responded in an impromptu Instagram Live. The WAP song creator said that she had all the rights to encourage her fans to be politically active and change the world.
Owens tweeted a video clip of her on the show, where both Shapiro and herself discussed their combined distaste for the aforementioned interview with Biden. She compared the situation to when Donald Trump claimed that he refused to do celebrity interviews but then decided to do one with Justin Bieber—which never happened.
She drove home the fact that pandering was a highly offensive practice that Cardi B had entertained. Owens went so far as to call the artist “barely literate,” mocking her iconic “okurr” phrase and claiming she did not have the capacity to argue with her from an intellectual standpoint.
This Twitter exchange continued all night long, with both women attacking each other. Cardi B shared a video of Trump supporters harassing her sister and her girlfriend. She lamented that the real problem was that they were not free Americans at the end of the day, no matter what. Cardi B also made the powerful claim that, despite being a Billboard No. 1 artist, she and her family were not at peace due to such incidents.
In retaliation, Owens called the song “WAP” inappropriate and a disillusion to the youth. Furthermore, she created memes (in the Jordan template), claiming that she “broke Cardi B.” Owens also said things such as “To those asking- no, I was not invited to speak at Cardi B’s funeral,” most likely as response to Cardi B and others who brought up the fact that she was not invited to speak at the Republican National Convention. Owens then placed certain demands for Cardi B in a tweet, asking her to stop lying about Trump and calling for more Black deaths.
With the women berating each other back and forth for quite some time, the fans and the haters of both had a field day calling the two out on their previous actions. Cardi B’s fans came to her aid, providing “receipts” of these actions, such as old tweets from Owens that resurfaced. These tweets show Owens proclaiming that she was an ardent fan of Cardi’s. It also said that she had been following her “ever since Love and Hip Hop.”
