BET AWARD NOMINATIONS EXCLUSIVE

This year marks the 20th year that the BET awards have celebrated Black excellence across the platforms of music, television, film, sports, and entertainment. Today, the 2020 nominees were announced.

The top nominee for 2020 is Drake, with a total of six nominations, but newcomers Megan Thee Stallion and Roddy Ricch are not far behind with five nominations each.

Drake’s nominations include Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Video of the Year, and is nominated twice both for Best Collaboration and the Viewer’s Choice Award. Megan Thee Stallion is nominated for Best Female Hip Hop Artist, Video of the Year, Album of the Year, Viewer’s Choice Award, and Best Collaboration. Roddy Ricch is nominated for Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Video of the Year, Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and the Viewer’s Choice Award.

Megan Thee Stallion’s album Fever has received a nomination for Best Album. The singer also received four other nominations, three for the album’s top track Hot Girl Summer.

Rounding off the top nominees are Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Lizzo and DaBaby, each with four nominations.

This will also make the third year BET has awarded a Best International Act, and the second year it has awarded a Best New International Act. The newfound Best International Act is a Viewer’s Choice Award, meaning viewers have the opportunity to vote for their favorite artist until June 19.

The ceremony also acknowledges Black excellence in film. Angela Bassett and Zendaya both have been nominated for the award of Best Actress, while Michael B. Jordan and Jaimie Foxx are among those nominated for Best Actor. The films Just Mercy, Dolemite Is My Name, and Queen & Slim have also been nominated in the category of Best Movie.

The BET Awards will air live on ViacomCBS networks on Sunday, June 28, at 8pm ET (8-11PM, ET/PT, 7-10PM, CT). It will air across networks including BET and BET HER, premiering nationally for the first time on CBS.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the awards ceremony will be a virtual celebration. BET has stated in a press release that the show will be “using an array of innovative techniques and artist-generated content,” in order to celebrate the “black love, joy, pride, and power” that BET has always represented.

“For the past 20 years, The BET Awards have paid homage to all things current and relevant,” said Connie Orlando, executive vice president of specials, music programming and music strategy at BET. “Despite the challenges of today, we will deliver a show filled with larger than life, inspiring, empowering and entertaining moments, which have shown the magic of our culture for over two decades.”
