The Power of Black Light

As I sit in my living room sipping on my glass of wine listening to Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit, I reflect on the current cry of blacks in America due to systematic racism that has oppressed African Americans for over 400 years. Police brutality is but an ally to the construct of white supremacy and its contribution to the countless number of deaths of innocent African American people. George Floyd’s tragic death on May 25th was simply the “straw that broke the camel’s back” which is an idiom in reference to the routine action of police brutality against blacks.

We are tired of wrestling with the constant mistreatment of racists simply because of the color of our skin. We are tired of trying to rationalize the deep level of hate and disdain that has been shown to our people for hundreds of years. We are tired of living in a world that celebrates black culture but devalues black lives. We will no longer sit back and simply let it happen. Unquestionably, the Black Lives Matter protests will be a significant fixture in American history forever.

What a Great Time to Be Alive

Now that African Americans have the attention of the entire world, I feel it’s important that we fine-tune our objectives to be favorable to our plight concerning the judicial system. Going forward, we need laws in place that will create a construct in which people of color deem suitable. We must also exercise our right to vote to put people in political positions that have our communities’ best interests. During this social unrest, it’s imperative that blacks in America become unapologetic about demanding resources (tangibles) that will further advance our demographic’s common interests. Now is the time to use our voice to speak up for what we know is right. Ida B. Wells once said, “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” Now is the time to use our voices to shine a light on the ongoing injustices of black people all over the world.
