COULD YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS?
My name is Cardine Dennis, a young and upcoming freelance makeup artist who lives in Brooklyn, NY and is inspired to bring beauty and a flair of new looks to many people.
WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO BEAUTY INDUSTRY?
I have always had a passion for beauty and art growing up. During my young teenage years, I can recall it was nearly impossible to leave my house without my eyeliner and lip gloss on. My passion for beauty all started after watching my sister braid various people’s hair and creating unique and creative hairstyles. Her creativity in braiding inspired me to learn how to be as creative and talented as she was and pursue braiding and doing hair. The passion for beauty through hair inspired me to evolve into a makeup artist because I had a passion in making myself and other people look completely beautiful and well kept.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE LOOK?
My signature look could be described as a natural, warm tone makeup look. I love a natural glowing look to my makeup with possibly a pop of color on the lip or smoked under my eyes.
WHICH ELEMENT OF YOUR JOB DO YOU MOST ENJOY?
I enjoy having my clients leave my chair extremely happy with the look that they had requested. I also enjoy creating new looks and pushing clients out of their comfort zone with different looks and as a result they become deeply in love. It warms my heart to see how others enjoy my work as much or more then me.
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU HAD A LOVE FOR MAKEUP?
I realized that I had a passion for makeup in my young teenage years. I used to express my passion for art through drawing but I gave that up. I began to realize that I always had the talent inside of me to be creative and I discovered doing makeup is a form of art. It takes an artists talent, vision, and skillful hands to provide people with an amazing makeup session. When I started to really pursue makeup, people around me would always compliment me on how I did my makeup and ask me to teach them or send a video tutorial. It was then during these pivotal moments in my life that I began to look at doing my makeup as a way to express my passion for art.
BEING A BLACK MAKEUP ARTIST, DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU GET OVERLOOKED COMPARED TO OTHER MAKEUP ARTISTS? IF SO, WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
As a black makeup artist, I never felt as if I got overlooked because there are a number of successful black makeup artists in my region.
A NUMBER OF COSMETIC BRANDS HAVE EXTENDED THEIR FOUNDATION COLORS TO ATTRACT WOMEN OF COLOR. DO YOU WONDER WHY IT TOOK SO LONG FOR THEM TO DO EXPAND THEIR COLORS?
Currently today, it is so interesting to see how numerous cosmetic brands have extended their foundation colors to attract women of color. When thinking about what triggered this change, I reflect on how women of color have voiced their opinions about lack of foundations that fits them. Many women of color have expressed their thoughts and emotions to various social medias such as Facebook, various review websites, YouTube, and other social medias. This has opened the eyes of many cosmetic brands. To sustain clients and build product sells, cosmetic brand companies were willing to satisfy the needs of women of color. It’s sad to see after many complaints and bad reviews, now women of color are finally getting what they deserve, more foundation colors to attract them. I am happy to see now there are more foundations for various women because makeup should be catered to all types of women.
WHAT DOES BEAUTY MEAN TO YOU?
Beauty is more than just getting a look done for the day. To me it’s about creativity, skin care, and being able to express yourself. The key to beauty is to be able to treat and take care of your skin as much as possible, keeping it healthy and radiant.
