People are constantly looking to challenge themselves in new ways; celebrities are no different. They continue to push the limits on their abilities, whether it be in music, sports, film, and so on. However, what has become more and more popular throughout 2019 is the big screen. Musical artists push boundaries as they broaden their horizons and seek fame in film or television. Here are some the few artists who have become successful actors:
Beyonće: Our Queen B made her musical debut in all-female group, Destiny’s Child. Her breakthrough in film was in the classic secret agent parody Austin Powers in Goldmember. While she continued her musical career as a solo artist, Beyonće dabbled in film. Among her appearances and roles are the following films: The Pink Panther (2006), Obsessed(2009), and The Lion King (2019).
Ice Cube: Coming “straight outta Compton” is a Los Angelos-based rapper Ice Cube. As a former member of the rap group, N.W.A., he quickly became one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history. Ice Cube’s debut into film—the character of Doughboy in Singleton’s Boyz n’ the Hood—was nothing short of memorable. Ice Cube continued to make strides in film, continuing with the Friday series (1995, 2000, 2002), the Barbershop series (2002, 2004, 2016), and the Jump Street series (2012, 2014).
Rihanna: The good girl gone bad sunk her teeth into every opportunity that came her way. From music to fashion to beauty, Rihanna is known as the philanthropist of the century. Her talent as an actress was nothing short of successful. She made her film debut in Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006), and after a brief hiatus returned in Battleship (2012). Rihanna’s most recent blockbuster, Ocean’s Eight (2018), was a revamping of the original—except with an all-female cast.
Will Smith: Will Smith began as a highly successful rapper and later fully turned his attention to acting—starting in 1991 as the star of television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. His breakthrough into Hollywood was in 1995, starring along Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys. Smith continued to work in film; some of his most acclaimed works include: Men in Black (1997), The Pursuit of Happiness (2007), and Seven Pounds (2008).
Queen Latifah: Queen Latifah made her mark as one of the few successful, female hip-hop/R&B artists. She made multiple appearances on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but her film career took off after the premiere of Barbershop 2: Back in Business. Her most recent work, Girls Trip (2017), was a major hit.
6. Ice-T: Ice-T began his musical career as a rapper in the 1980s. His time in music was overshadowed by his acting career, which began in 1991 when he played a police detective in New Jack City. He later worked alongside Denzel Washington in Ricochet (1991), and his film career continued until he signed for the television role of Sergeant Odafin Tutuola on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit—a character he has played from 2000 to present.
