WOMEN’S MONTH INTERVIEW WITH JOHNATHAN POPE

What do you think needs to be done more for women’s rights?

Women’s rights is something that definitely hits home for me in a major way. With me having the absolute privilege of raising a beautiful little girl of the main values that I try to in steel in her is knowing her self-worth and knowing she is more than capable of achieving what any man can achieve in the modern day era. Women’s rights have come along way but there is still so much work to be done and ensuring that she will have the opportunity to work in an environment where she will not be judged based on how she looks, harass or placed into a compromising position is what I want not just for her but all the little girls that aspire to be great due to their intellect.

Why did you decide to choose fashion design?

I always have to remind myself that I didn’t choose fashion design it chose me. You know when your young it’s hard to always know what you path should be, you try different things based on what people tell you, the environment you live in or just what you think society tells you should be doing but once all those paths dried up I came back to the one thing that has always there for me from the start which is designing. I never really saw myself as a fashion designer but more of a creator/ an artist, and fashion/clothing/style just so happens to be my media and/or canvas which allows me to demonstrate and showcase my creativity and personality.

How would you describe your personal styale?

It’s challenging to sum up my personal style into one word or a category based on how diverse it has evolved over the years. My style definitely stems from an artist perspective in the sense that nothing is off limits and I’m willing to try just about anything at least once. You know people perceive style of being what an individual wear which isn’t necessarily true. One’s style is more than just the clothes on their back but also the type of shoes they wear, how they wear their hair, the make-up they choose to put on before leaving out the door in the
morning or just simply as how they walk and carry themselves in the public eye. My personal style is something that I live and breathe each and every day which is why it is my own.

What is one thing you would tell our youth about being confident?

What I would tell the youth of today about confidence is that it isn’t something that can be given to you but rather something that you learn and develop organically over time. The things that help with that process is surrounding yourself around well-grounded individuals who want to build you up rather than tear you down. There are so many distractions due to social media and the world we live in that can easily make any of us feel less about ourselves but as long as you continue to trust in those who have an interest in you and believe in your growth you will become more confident in the person you want to become and the path you choose for yourself.

What do you want your legacy to be?

You know I’m truly blessed to be able to say that I am able to do something each and every day that I truly love to do. The fact that I have been building a platform that allows me to showcase my GOD given ability in the form of creating clothing that people respond positive to and believe in our mission is a dream come true. When it’s all said and done, I just want to become the face of what it means to be “Unique”. Nothing would make me happier than to have UQCApparel become a household name and become synonymous in our culture with what it means to be an individual, someone who is comfortable in their own skin and dares each and every day to expose what makes them different from their neighbor. Then to be able to pass it along to my children and have them pick up where I leave off and take the brand to places that I can’t imagine just so our mission will live on forever.
