Meet the Beautiful and Talented Mayou
There comes a time when you realize that there is something missing from your music library. It’s always fun to blast the party music, and live vicariously through the lyrics of reckless sex and careless money spending with booty-popping beats in the background. And there’s exhilaration when your favorite mainstream song plays on the radio and then, when you change to another radio station, you hear the beginnings of that song’s melody play again.
But an eclectic library allows for different moods to be explored as well as a different part of one’s personality. People are very complex, after all. With every radio station having the same songs in heavy rotation, people search for something more “organic.”
This is the word that I would use to describe Mayou, an independent music artist born and raised in Canada. Organic is also a word that Mayou used to describe what it means to be an independent artist during our telephone interview, an interview that felt, well, very natural and organic if I say so myself.
Porsche B: In the “Mayou Is” section of your website, you’re described as a fearless survivor of a broken home, how has that strength and fearlessness translated to your work and pursuit?
Mayou: With every struggle you either become defeated or become a better person. I worked on myself. And music was a perfect escape, as well as God. I believe when any artist is a survivor of any hardship, they want to share their story. So, me being in a lot of pain made me understand the importance of writing and expressing my emotions. I felt a lot of anger and sadness, but I became so much stronger for it.
Porsche B: You started out in musical theater in Canada and by 15 years old, you were training in Canada and in the United States. Do you believe having a theatrical background gives you an edge in the music industry?
Every artist, or just every person, has something to heal and something new to teach.
Mayou: For sure because I was hurting so much and wanting to be there for my family. People were very sick in my family. That stemmed from the eagerness to tell a story and the passion and needing to accomplish something great. I just love doing this. This is like an addiction. Every artist, or just every person, has something to heal and something new to teach.
Porsche B: The single, “Anything for Your Love,” conjures a vision of sunny days, sifting through photos of a beloved, and warm embraces. How would you describe your sound and what can listeners expect to hear in the future?
Mayou: I would officially say Pop/R&B. The single was for an independent movie, but it went around the world. I wanted to capture what people would do for love. I’m excited to show people my style. I have a few features on some upcoming projects, so people are going to see my style a little more. Listeners can expect heavy beats, pop, urban, and R&B.
Porsche B: On your website you’ve teased us with pieces for the music video. Any hints on what we may see, and more importantly, when we can see the full video?
Mayou: The video can now be seen on Vevo. My website has just been updated.
Porsche B: Any upcoming stage performances or appearances for listeners to look forward to in the near future?
Mayou: Yes there are more! I’ll be back in the States in the beginning of January to record my album in Atlanta as well as Los Angeles. I don’t have the exact days just yet. But I just love both those cities and LA is incredible; it’s become a second home for me. Look for me to be in a movie titled “Turnt.” It’s with T.I. and I’m working on a song for the soundtrack. Also, my second music video will be shot next month in Atlanta. So I will be in the US a lot more.
Porsche B: Since you are a triple threat (singing, dancing, and acting), are you focusing on any other avenues or are you just concentrating on singing currently?
Mayou: I’m not going to say no to opportunities if they arise; however, they have to be very organic. I’m not looking to be the next “so-and-so,” so it just has to make sense.
Porsche B: Organic. I like that description. By following that standard, where would you like to see yourself in the next year?
I cannot wait to get back on stage.
Mayou: I would love to connect with more people. I love the stage, I love performing and I love people. That is my absolute favorite thing in the world. I cannot wait to get back on stage. I would also like to write more for other artists and broaden my reach and connect with other cultures. I am going to put out a French album for my Canadian listeners.
Porsche B: Is there anyone who you would love to collaborate with in the near future?
Mayou: Features have to be organic for me. We can have respect but if we don’t click it won’t work. I don’t like forcing projects. I don’t look for features, but if I’m in the studio and I hear something, I won’t stop myself. It would be hard to name just one. I’d love to work with other R&B artists and other genres of music, not because they have a big name, but because we connect. I’m just very open.
It was a pleasure to speak with such a positive and talented artist like Mayou. We are very excited to see what the future holds for her. Make sure you check out all of her music and check back soon for our next feature spotlight.
